Space Planning

“Space Planning”

Many young adults while going to school or saving money for their first place are choosing to stay at home.  Updating a children’s bedroom can be a daunting task.  Color schemes once in a little girl’s “hot pink phase” no longer reflected this young woman’s personality.

The main goal of this room was to change its overall feel and improve its function.  Using her bedroom for sleeping, getting ready, watching TV, studying and even entertaining friends (all while sharing her room with her golden retriever).  Her bedroom had become more of a mini bachelor flat (everything but the kitchen).

Since we couldn’t change the structure of the room, space planning and organization became more of the focus for this project.  With budget constraints, we tried to incorporate furniture pieces, even bedding that she could take with her and use again in a new place.  Re-positioning the bed, adding over-length curtain panels (to elongate the small window) and moving furniture towards the walls we were able to “open up” the room, giving more space for everyday life and her needs.

Removing the outdated furniture we needed to incorporate better and cost effective closet storage for her clothes and shoes.  Even doing a little “on-site DIY project” we re-purposed the old headboard giving it a more modern look.  Adding an entertainment unit (she could use in her new living room) with nooks for secondary storage baskets and display;  A bathroom cabinet for all her toiletries;  Storage cubes for extra seating;  A corner bench with storage (for household items she was collecting for her future place).  Every available inch of space was used.

Besides changing wall paint to a neutral color we managed to update this room and change its the overall feel, including adding personal details reflective of her personality.  Keeping all her current needs in mind and future ones.
