“Master Bedroom and Master Sitting Room”
Traditionally on architectural drawings the Master bedroom is usually a larger scaled bedroom with an ensuite, compared to the rest in the bedrooms in a home. Re-designing plans, making additional room in its layout for a sitting area and walk-in closets are now a common practice. This original home’s floor plans boasted a large Master, a decent sized walk in closet and equivalent Master Ensuite. However, with a Sunroom Addition off the back of the house occupying a space under an unused master balcony, the possibility of extending the Master was possible.
Using the same sliding door as the new entrance way allowed for little impact to the family. Designing the Master Sitting Room with two large windows factoring in the amazing views and southern exposure. A much better way than from the bistro set on a small four foot wide balcony. With the space available dividing the new Master Sitting plans design in half allowing for a second walk-in closet. A dedicated boudoir just for “Her”, gave him the approval for a TV finally in the bedroom. That and a couples dream of not having to share a closet, when “sharing the closet” is usually one-sided.
Designing this Master Bedroom extension as a luxurious hotel retreat, an escape into paradise from a busy day or week. Along one window a custom daybed with soft-closing pull-out drawers underneath, and with two cabinets at opposite ends. One cabinet for the TV components and the other for a mini wine cooler and crystal carafe containing a nice single malt. A Porter’s Gate chair and a half (with footstool for those tired legs), an oversized chair allowed both an opportunity to share and cuddle up in, or enjoy it all to oneself. A Murray Feiss chandelier centering the room and two wall sconces giving further symmetry to the custom Millwork. A Dublin Antique White Electric fireplace and Bookcase unit, added warmth and elegance. A large antique white Bedroom make-up vanity from Lee Emma’s Treasures, made getting ready for a special evening out even more of an “occasion”.
Opulent wall paper in rich blue and gold tones, added above the chair rail, further gives the room that upscale hotel feel. Adding the same wall paper to the feature wall above the Master bed, ties both rooms together. Keeping the previous balcony doorway location the same, we installed a beautiful set of french doors. When seen from the hallway opening into the room created an amazing view drawing you in. Balancing feminine and masculine details with the furniture, materials and decor the room made into an oasis for both to enjoy.
A pocket door divided the Master Sitting Room from the equally impressive walk-in closet. A dream closet with perimeter wall to wall cabinets, and a double sided chest of drawers in the center of the room, plenty of room on top for displaying jewelry. Two mini crystal Minka Lavery chandeliers were hung above them giving equally magnificent detail to the ceiling when lit. A walk-in closet for “Her” clothes now, and for a shoe collection that would make Imelda Marcus proud. With the exception on one wall having a window to allow for natural light, and to balance to look of the home’s new addition. She now had enough room for “everything”.
Updating the Master Bedroom to match the new feel of the additional room, adding the color scheme of the blues and gold tones, adding a corner vignette with a regal dog bed which replaced the old floor model shoved down by the side of the bed as an afterthought. Even the dog had “His” relaxing spot. The Master Bedroom and Master Sitting Room now looked and felt as it was always been planned this way. The goal of pleasing every family member was achieved not only in the new space but in its original section as well. Enhancing both with form and function, a Master Bedroom Retreat worthy of its own magazine cover.
